Must-have Chrome Extensions For SEO

This article was updated on: 07.02.2022

Whether you’re a marketer, a business owner, or an SEO, you will know the importance of SEO today. Whether SEO is a key part of your job or something that you know you need to know but can’t get to grips with, you are probably overwhelmed with resources and tips online.

I’ve collected some of the best Chrome Extensions for you to either add into your current SEO workflow or start using to integrate SEO into some daily marketing tasks. These are a mix of advanced SEO plugins and general marketing extensions that will help you gain valuable insights without opening a new tab!

1. Tag Assistant

It makes sense to list this one first as it is one of the most important for all agency-side SEOs. When reviewing a website for the first time or having that initial call with a prospect, checking if they have Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager set up on their site is important. It’s a great conversation starter, especially if the Tag Assistant is showing that it’s not set up correctly. This plugin should always be used after any site migration or a major site change and saves a lot of manual work!

2. Wappalyzer

Another great starting tool when reviewing sites for the first time, but also a great tool to use when auditing competitors too. It’s good to benchmark competitors, especially if it’s an industry that you are not familiar with, and understand if there are any common uses of tools and CMS’. Wappalyzer allows you to review a list of websites at once, making it ideal for competitor analysis.

3. Web Developer Tools

This is a definite must-have for any SEO. The more you focus on technical SEO in your workflow, the more useful this tool will be to you, however, it has something for everyone. Some key uses of the tools that can help give you audit and analysis insights are:

  • Reviewing the header hierarchy on a site with a clear overview to show clients and web developers. Go to Information then Document Outline.
  • Turning off JavaScript and CSS on a site to review content. Go to Disable then Disable JavaScript.
  • Clearing cookies on a site. Go to Cookies then Disable Cookies.
  • Looking for alt tags on a specific page. Go to Images then Display Image Alt Attributes.

4. Scraper

Scraper is great for collecting data at scale so that you can audit mass amounts of data quickly. This Chrome extension is good for scraping data from websites, such as page titles. It can also be used to scrape search results pages for specific search queries to understand what types of sites are ranking.

5. Quick Click Website Audit

This plugin is an absolute must-have for all SEO auditing. The plugin integrates some classic SEO tools, such as PageSpeed Insights, Ahrefs and BuzzSumo, into one mega Chrome extension. The plugin gives you countless insights which will allow you to audit a site from a technical, performance, domain info, and inbound links perspective – without leaving the tab you’re in, woah.

6. SEO Minion

This tool is our favourite tool for checking metadata. You can use SEO Minion to check metadata quickly and to test your own metadata too. It lets you see the title and description for any page with one click, and provides a simple character counter to make sure that your own recommendations are the right length, all without leaving the website you are working on.

This is a great plugin to have after a site launch or when trying to understand the general health of a website, be that your own, your client’s, or a competitor. Check My Links allows you to easily see the status of all internal links on the web page you are on. You can see:

  • Valid links – all links with a 200 status code
  • Valid redirecting links – all links with a 301 status code
  • Warnings – links that are not a 200 or 301, or an error but somewhere in between such as a 302
  • Invalid links – error pages such as 400 and 500 errors

8. Ahrefs SEO Toolbar

All SEOs will have heard of Ahrefs, it is the preferred tool for a lot of people and the Chrome extension doesn’t disappoint either! The toolbar is great for page-level auditing and getting a snapshot of the performance of an individual page. The toolbar pulls in all of our favourite Ahrefs metrics; UR (URL Rating), DR (Domain Rating), KW (Keywords), RD (Referring Domains). It also adds to the toolbar to each result in the SERPs (Search Engine Result Pages) so that you can understand the competition and metrics for pages ranking for specific search queries.

9. Nofollow

Nofollow is a great shortcut for any SEOs or digital PRs focusing on link acquisition. The Nofollow plugin is great to prioritise publications that do not use nofollow links as a standard for every article across the site. However, given Google’s recent news that they now use nofollow links as a “suggestion” rather than a rule, take this with a pinch of salt. It can also be used to check if nofollow links may have been accidentally added to specific areas of the site.

10. Page Analytics

A great Chrome extension to gain insights into which internal links users are engaging with the most. Access to the site’s Google Analytics profile is necessary to get this data. You can see the percentage of users that are clicking on each CTA and link in the copy.

11. Grammarly

Not only appropriate for SEOs of course, but Grammarly is a highly recommended tool and a tool that everyone at Impression uses. Particularly useful for content writers, but also for internal and external communication. Grammarly will audit your sentences and highlight any issues, meaning that typos and incorrect use of there/they’re/their should never be seen in your work emails again!

12. Just Not Sorry

Again, not necessarily SEO focused but a Chrome extension that I have used for a good couple of years now! This plugin is specifically for Gmail and will make recommendations to your emails, highlighting the words or phrases in the same way as Grammarly, to make them more direct and actionable. This is particularly useful for getting your point, recommendations and plan of action across to a client or team member.

Conclusion

All of the above Chrome extensions are free or have free versions. So get installing, testing, and auditing and you’ll never have to leave Chrome again (unless you need to do a Screaming Frog crawl of course).

If there are any other Chrome extensions that have improved your SEO workflow that I have not mentioned, then put them in the comments below!
