Dixon Jones asked, does link-building for SEO still matter?
Right now, he says, it does matter.
According to Dixon, the page rank algorithm still exists. Third party research from Stone Temple and Search Engine Land show that Google’s top 3 search ranking factors include links, which means that links are still very valuable.
Dixon’s next question was, how many links is enough?
This is something we’re often asked in SEO, and our answer is always, ‘it depends’ – because different links have different strengths. The vast majority of web pages are not very valuable, and we also know that internal links affect the strength of a website too. However, we can estimate the page strength, through platforms such as Moz, Majestic and Google Page rank.
So, back to the original question – how many links is enough? Dixon says that it can sometime be one, or even zero. However, links still matter, Dixon claims.
Dixon then gives us an overview of his workflow that he uses for sustainable link-building.
Creating the workflow looks like thi
- identify the right influencers
- engage
- define the digital asset
- prepare the launch
- monitor results
The tools he uses for initial research and identifying the right influencers are:
- Buzzsumo
- Clique Hunter
When engaging, Dixon claims that the following connection building tools are useful:
- LinkedIn is great
- Email is good
- Facebook is still okay
- Twitter is a stepping stone
- Reddit and other forums
Engaging is the hardest part, he claims, as it’s always about chemistry. Beer is Dixon’s favourite networking tool, but one on ones and setting up meetings are also useful to create meaningful relationships which will help engage with the right people.
