Typically, this information is taken from third-party sources like Wikipedia, which will be cited at the bottom of the panel.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cdiv class=\"wp-block-image\">\u003Cfigure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\">\u003Cimg loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fimages.impression.co.uk\u002F2022\u002F05\u002Flion-google-knowledge-panel.png?auto=compress%2Cformat&q=90\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17473\" width=\"265\" height=\"503\"\u002F>\u003C\u002Ffigure>\u003C\u002Fdiv>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In this example, we can see that the description of the lion is immediately followed by a link to the source page on Wikipedia, whereas the vulnerable conservation status of lions is followed by an Encyclopaedia of Life citation.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Most recently, we have started to see Google writing its own Knowledge Panels without citing any sources. You can an example taken from the SERPs for ‘Nottingham’ below:\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cdiv class=\"wp-block-image\">\u003Cfigure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\">\u003Cimg loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fimages.impression.co.uk\u002F2022\u002F05\u002Fnottingham-knowledge-panel.png?auto=compress%2Cformat&q=90\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17475\" width=\"344\" height=\"321\"\u002F>\u003C\u002Ffigure>\u003C\u002Fdiv>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In this instance, the usual citation is replaced simply with ‘Google’, indicating that the information is not taken directly from a third-party website.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Interestingly, these Knowledge Panels are not automatically generated as you might expect. Google’s Danny Sullivan has confirmed that the text is actually written by Google employees, and went on to say that they’ve been doing this increasingly since 2018:\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cfigure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\u003Cdiv class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n\u003Cblockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\u003Cp lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">It&#39;s not new. Effective at the time of writing, this allows users to ask for the removal of listings that feature personal contact information like a phone number, email address, or physical address, as well as confidential login details.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Google’s Global Policy Leader for Search, Michelle Chang, had this to say about the new feature in a \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fblog.google\u002Fproducts\u002Fsearch\u002Fnew-options-for-removing-your-personally-identifiable-information-from-search\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent blog post\u003C\u002Fa>:\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"has-text-align-center\">\u003Cem>‘Open access to information is a key goal of Search, but so is empowering people with the tools they need to protect themselves and keep their sensitive, personally identifiable information private.
