After all, the smaller group of searchers that you target, the more they have in common.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>What happens when you strip everything back, getting rid of everything apart from the profitable areas of your account? For one of our clients, doing this one thing alone almost \u003Cstrong>tripled\u003C\u002Fstrong> revenue month-on-month.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Although we spend most of our days building out campaigns only to then restrict them with negative keywords, doing the opposite &#8211; taking a &#8220;less is more&#8221; approach &#8211; can sometimes lead to much better results.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>There are some accounts where such a technique could kill growth, but in our particular case, we had a lot of data to work. There was never a danger of spreading ourselves too thin, so once we&#8217;d refined things using this method, we saw amazing improvements. We still grow and scale and accounts and think you should too. However, if you have a large account and feel it could benefit, this could be perfect for you.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>So, if you&#8217;ll excuse the massive irony of this long, detailed post being all about minimalism(!), here&#8217;s how you can implement this simple principle into your account and (hopefully) replicate our results!\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch2 id=\"less-but-better\">Less, but better\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\u003Cp>What&#8217;s odder than our outcome is the origin of our inspiration &#8211; the world of industrial design.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>In the 1994 book, &#8220;Weniger, aber besser&#8221;, German industrial designer Dieter Rams is quoted as saying the following:\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cblockquote>\u003Cp>&#8220;Good design is as little as possible. Less, but better, because it concentrates on the essential aspects, \u2028and the products are not burdened with non-essentials. Back to purity, back to simplicity.&#8221; &#8211; Dieter Rams\u003C\u002Fp>\u003C\u002Fblockquote>\n\u003Cp>Although easy to miss, the three-word slogan &#8220;Less, but better&#8221; went on to influence both the world of design as well as a global minimalism movement. Now the concept has made its way to PPC, bringing with it unbelievable results.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch2 id=\"concentrated-ppc\">Concentrated PPC\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\u003Cp>This isn&#8217;t a new idea, but it&#8217;s certainly a sensible one. In fact, one of the richest men of all time suggested a similar approach more than a century ago.\u003Cbr \u002F>\n\u003Cimg loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fcdn.impression.co.uk\u002F2021\u002F05\u002Fcarnegie.jpg\" alt=\"Andrew Carnegie\" width=\"212\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-13639\" \u002F>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Back in 1885, Andrew Carnegie addressed an audience at the Curry Commercial College in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. One of the richest men of all time, Carnegie&#8217;s net worth today would be around $310 billion dollars &#8211; more than \u003Cem>double\u003C\u002Fem> that of Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos. The fortunate crowd were lucky enough to hear the billionaire discuss his life as a businessman as well as share with them the secret to his success:\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cblockquote>\u003Cp>&#8220;And here is the prime condition of success &#8211; the great secret: Concentrate your energy, thought and capital exclusively upon the business in which you are engaged&#8230;the concerns which fail are those which have scattered their capital which means that they have scattered their brains also&#8230;&#8217;Don&#8217;t put all your eggs in one basket&#8217; is all wrong. I tell you, put all your eggs in one basket and then watch that basket. Look around you and take notice. Men who do that do not often fail. It is easy to watch and carry the one basket. It&#8217;s trying to carry too many baskets that breaks most eggs&#8230;&#8221; &#8211; Andrew Carnegie\u003C\u002Fp>\u003C\u002Fblockquote>\n\u003Cp>As counterintuitive as it may sound, Carnegie was right. Creating more focused Google Ads campaigns not only means more control, but it can also mean more conversions too.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch2 id=\"bringing-minimalism-to-ppc\">Bringing minimalism to PPC\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\u003Cp>Usually, when building PPC campaigns, we build out campaigns, making them larger over time. In order to keep them under control, we add negative keywords to eliminate anything undesirable. Our aim is to expand the campaigns to drive as much revenue (or sometimes more specifically, as many leads) as profitably as possible.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>However, what would happen if we were to turn this idea on its head? \u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cul>\n\u003Cli>Instead of building out the account, what would happen if we made it \u003Cem>smaller\u003C\u002Fem> &#8211; as small as it could possibly be?\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003Cli>Rather than adding negative keywords to get rid of wasted spend, what if we only added in the keywords that brought in the most revenue? \u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003Cli>Is it possible to drive more revenue and leads by making the campaigns smaller?\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003C\u002Ful>\n\u003Cp>The answer is a resounding &#8220;Yes, we can.&#8221; On top of this, doing so can bring in more revenue, more leads and be super profitable.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>By taking this approach, we increased revenue for one of our clients by 172.07% month-on-month. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>It turns out that less \u003Cem>is\u003C\u002Fem> more after all.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cdiv style=\"background-color: PaleTurquoise;padding: 10px 20px 10px 20px;margin: 1em 0\">\n\u003Ch3 id=\"172-07-mom-increase-that-could-be-pennies-or-seasonal\">172.07% MoM increase? That could be pennies or seasonal!\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>This was no small feat: For this particular client, this one change increased revenue by more than £65,000. That&#8217;s about an $84,000 \u003Cem>increase\u003C\u002Fem> in revenue. Not small change.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>What \u003Cem>would\u003C\u002Fem> explain such an increase? Minimalism.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003C\u002Fdiv>\n\u003Ch2 id=\"how-to-increase-revenue-by-172-07-month-on-month\">How to increase revenue by 172.07% month-on-month\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\u003Cp>So, how \u003Cem>did \u003C\u002Fem>we manage to increase revenue by so much in a matter of days? Simple &#8211; \u003Cstrong>we eliminated everything unprofitable.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>It sounds like common sense because it is, however, when we say &#8220;everything&#8221;, we really do mean \u003Cem>&#8220;everything.&#8221;\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>To make sure that you don&#8217;t miss anything, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"#cheekychecklist\">we&#8217;ve compiled a small checklist\u003C\u002Fa> below so that you can tick things off one by one.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch3 id=\"what-youll-need\">What you&#8217;ll need\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>You&#8217;ll need three things:\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Col>\n\u003Cli>Conversion data &#8211; the more, the better\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003Cli>Revenue data &#8211; if you&#8217;re managing a lead-generating account, see my note below\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003Cli>Faith &#8211; this approach is counterintuitive, but the results speak for themselves\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003C\u002Fol>\n\u003Cp>Faith is particularly important. It&#8217;ll feel a bit scary shutting everything off until you start seeing the results.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cdiv style=\"background-color: PaleTurquoise;padding: 10px 20px 10px 20px;margin: 1em 0\">\n\u003Ch4 id=\"if-youre-managing-a-lead-gen-account\">If you&#8217;re managing a lead gen account\u003C\u002Fh4>\n\u003Cp>We didn&#8217;t do this on a lead-gen account, but we also saw a 133% month-on-month increase in transactions off the back of these changes. If you&#8217;d like to give this approach a go on your lead gen account anyway, you&#8217;ll need to mentally replace &#8220;profitable&#8221; with &#8220;converting at a CPA at or lower than your target CPA&#8221; below. \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"\u002Fget-in-touch\u002F\">Let us know how well it works for you!\u003C\u002Fa> Send us a message via \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"\u002Fget-in-touch\u002F\">our contact form\u003C\u002Fa> or \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"#comments\">leave us a comment\u003C\u002Fa> below.\u003C\u002Fdiv>\n\u003Ch3 id=\"cheekychecklist\" style=\"padding-top: 50px;margin-top: -50px\">Our Nine-Step Checklist\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>Follow these nine steps and you&#8217;ll be well on your way to increasing profitability in your Google Ads account.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Col>\n\u003Cli>\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"#step1\">Identify which campaign types are profitable\u003C\u002Fa> and get rid of everything else\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003Cul>\n\u003Cli>Alternative: \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"#thealternative\">Keep campaigns which are profitable\u003C\u002Fa> even when the campaign type is not\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003C\u002Ful>\n\u003Cli>\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"#step2\">Look up which locations are profitable\u003C\u002Fa>&#8230;and get rid of everything else\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003Cli>\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"#step3\">Open Devices, determine which ones are profitable\u003C\u002Fa>&#8230;and then get rid of everything else\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003Cli>\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"#step4\">Verify which of the ad groups in your current ad group structure are profitable\u003C\u002Fa>&#8230;and (you guessed it) get rid of everything else\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003Cli>\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"#step5\">Evaluate which keywords are profitable\u003C\u002Fa> and GET RID OF EVERYTHING ELSE\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003Cul>\n\u003Cli>Optional: \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"#kfl\">Use a keyword frequency list\u003C\u002Fa> to help determine an ad group structure\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003C\u002Ful>\n\u003Cli>\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"#step6\">Create new ads based on the ones which are profitable\u003C\u002Fa> and then (all together now!) get rid of everything else\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003Cli>\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"#step7\">Assess the above and determine an appropriate campaign structure and ad group structure\u003C\u002Fa>\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003Cli>\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"#step8\">Kick off your new campaigns with proportional budgets based on historical revenue data\u003C\u002Fa>\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003Cli>\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"#step9\">Email your boss to show off your great results (optional)\u003C\u002Fa>\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003C\u002Fol>\n\u003Cdiv style=\"background-color: PaleTurquoise;padding: 10px 20px 10px 20px;margin: 1em 0\">\n\u003Ch3 id=\"how-do-i-know-whats-profitable-and-what-isnt\">How do I know what&#8217;s profitable and what isn&#8217;t?\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003Cp>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Google Ads has a handy metric to tell you what&#8217;s profitable and what needs chopping. \u003Cb>Conv. value \u002F cost\u003C\u002Fb> (found under &#8220;Conversions&#8221; when adding columns) is a measurement of how profitable everything is. It&#8217;s more commonly referred to as return on ad spend (ROAS).\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>If something has a ROAS of less than 1, that means that it&#8217;s unprofitable (and it&#8217;s about to be exterminated). Anything with a ROAS greater than 1 is profitable &#8211; the higher, the better. For example, if a campaign has a ROAS of 10 (a 10:1 ROAS), that means that for every £1 that you&#8217;ve spent on the campaign, it&#8217;s generated £10 in revenue. (You might want to keep spending!)\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003C\u002Fdiv>\n\u003Ch4 id=\"step1\" style=\"padding-top: 50px;margin-top: -50px\">Identify which campaign types are profitable\u003C\u002Fh4>\n\u003Cp>Our particular client was running Search, Display, Video and Smart campaigns. Since our goal was to increase the return on ad spend, we added the &#8220;Conv. value \u002F cost&#8221; column and looked at each campaign type individually.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Search and Display were doing really well&#8230;Video and Smart campaigns, not so much. No messing about &#8211; we paused the unprofitable campaign types and didn&#8217;t look back.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch5 id=\"thealternative\" style=\"padding-top: 50px;margin-top: -50px\">If you&#8217;re hesitant about boycotting whole campaign types\u003C\u002Fh5>\n\u003Cp>Let&#8217;s be clear here: if you set up a display campaign last night, maybe today isn&#8217;t the best time to shut it off because it hasn&#8217;t converted yet. We&#8217;ve made the assumption that your accounts have been running for a while and have gathered enough conversion data that you can actually make decisions with.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>An alternative to our &#8220;cut everything&#8221; approach is to go down a level and look at the profitability of campaigns. Rather than kill off the \u003Cem>whole campaign type\u003C\u002Fem> for being unprofitable, you can just pause any \u003Cem>campaigns\u003C\u002Fem> which aren&#8217;t profitable instead. That means that if you have a profitable video remarketing campaign, you should keep it running even if all of your other video campaigns are letting the team down.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cfigure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\">\u003Cimg loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fcdn.impression.co.uk\u002F2021\u002F05\u002Ffirefighter-484540_1920.jpg\" alt=\"An effective ad group structure is a chance to put out fires before they get bigger\" width=\"1024\" height=\"680\" class=\"size-large wp-image-13647\" \u002F>\u003Cfigcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Extinguish problem areas before it&#8217;s too late!\u003C\u002Ffigcaption>\u003C\u002Ffigure>\n\u003Ch4 id=\"step2\" style=\"padding-top: 50px;margin-top: -50px\">Look up which locations are profitable\u003C\u002Fh4>\n\u003Cp>Head to Locations, add the column for Conv. value \u002F cost and find any locations that aren&#8217;t profitable. Now all you have to do is get rid of them. No ifs, no buts!\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>With our client, we eliminated \u003Cstrong>whole countries\u003C\u002Fstrong> because they hadn&#8217;t performed. Remember, nothing is permanent and you can always add them back in later.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>If you don&#8217;t have many locations to choose from, you need to get more granular with your location targeting. \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fsupport.google.com\u002Fgoogle-ads\u002Fanswer\u002F2453994?co=ADWORDS.IsAWNCustomer%3Dtrue&amp;hl=en&amp;oco=0\">Pull up a Geographic report\u003C\u002Fa> and then only target the countries\u002Fregions\u002Fcities that have proven themselves to be profitable.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch4 id=\"step3\" style=\"padding-top: 50px;margin-top: -50px\">Open Devices and determine which ones are profitable\u003C\u002Fh4>\n\u003Cp>Similarly to Locations, have a look at your devices and get rid of any that aren&#8217;t profitable. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>With our client, all devices were profitable (hooray!), but since some converted worse than the average across all devices, we added proportional negative bid adjustments to these. For example, if Mobile had a conversion rate of 1.50% and the average conversion rate across all devices was 2.00%, we&#8217;d add a negative bid adjustment of -25%. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Why -25%? Because 1.50% is 25% below the average.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Still confused? Use this formula:\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cblockquote>\u003Cp>100 × (device conv. rate ÷ average conv. rate) &#8211; 1 = bid adjustment percentage\u003C\u002Fp>\u003C\u002Fblockquote>\n\u003Cp>100 × ((1.5 ÷ 2.00) &#8211; 1) = -25 so the negative bid adjustment would be -25%.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cfigure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\">\u003Cimg loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fimages.impression.co.uk\u002F2021\u002F12\u002Fwilhemina-circle.png?auto=compress%2Cformat&fit=crop&h=1000&q=90&w=1892\" alt=\"iPad and Computer\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" class=\"size-large wp-image-13650\" \u002F>\u003Cfigcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">If certain devices aren&#8217;t profitable, get rid of them!\u003C\u002Ffigcaption>\u003C\u002Ffigure>\n\u003Ch4 id=\"step4\" style=\"padding-top: 50px;margin-top: -50px\">Verify which of the ad groups in your current ad group structure are profitable\u003C\u002Fh4>\n\u003Cp>This is very similar to what you did earlier with locations. Look at all of your ad groups and establish which ones are profitable. If your account structure is fairly symmetrical at the moment (e.g. you have the same structure but rolled out in different locations) this will be perfect for you, as you can just identify the winning ad groups and create them in all of your new campaigns.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch4 id=\"step5\" style=\"padding-top: 50px;margin-top: -50px\">Evaluate which keywords are profitable\u003C\u002Fh4>\n\u003Cp>Keywords are the lifeblood of any account (for now!) so this step is arguably the most important. As tempting as it will be to leave some stragglers in there, cut everything that isn&#8217;t profitable. To ensure constant growth in the account, we suggest adding at least some of your keywords using \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fsupport.google.com\u002Fgoogle-ads\u002Fanswer\u002F7042511?co=ADWORDS.IsAWNCustomer%3Dtrue&amp;hl=en&amp;oco=0\">the broad match modified match type\u003C\u002Fa>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch5 id=\"kfl\" style=\"padding-top: 50px;margin-top: -50px\">Optional: Use a keyword frequency list to help determine an ad group structure\u003C\u002Fh5>\n\u003Cp>Once you have all of your profitable keywords, you can use this optional step to help you inform an ad group structure. Using a \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.writewords.org.uk\u002Fword_count.asp\">word frequency counter\u003C\u002Fa>, determine which words are appearing most often in your most profitable keywords. You can then use this to inform your ad group structure, grouping your most profitable keywords accordingly.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>You probably don&#8217;t have to do this, but that&#8217;s what we did. Why not see what the word frequency counter comes up with and then make a decision from there?\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch4 id=\"step6\" style=\"padding-top: 50px;margin-top: -50px\">Create new ads based on the ones which are profitable\u003C\u002Fh4>\n\u003Cp>This step is a little different to the others. This time, look at your ads and single out the \u003Cem>types\u003C\u002Fem> which are profitable. Rather than just pausing any particular ads which are unprofitable, filter your profitable ones, get an idea of the ad structures which have performed well and then create new ads based on these.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch4 id=\"step7\" style=\"padding-top: 50px;margin-top: -50px\">Assess the above and determine an appropriate campaign structure and ad group structure\u003C\u002Fh4>\n\u003Cp>If you&#8217;re really struck for a suitable campaign and ad group structure after all of this, definitely consider using \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"#kfl\">a keyword frequency list\u003C\u002Fa> to determine your ad group structure. Otherwise, create a suitable campaign and ad group structure and start building those new campaigns.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch4 id=\"step8\" style=\"padding-top: 50px;margin-top: -50px\">Kick off your new campaigns with proportional budgets based on historical revenue data\u003C\u002Fh4>\n\u003Cp>The last thing you want to do is not throw enough money at the most profitable areas of your account. Rather than using the ROAS for this, we suggest using revenue.
