Simply log into your AWS console; head over to the RDS control panel and click into your WordPress database instance. In the top right of the RDS instance page you will see the Instance Actions drop-down. Press and select ‘Create (Aurora) read replica’. Go through the steps to setup the instance. It’s a good idea to create this new read replica in another availability zone so it’s highly available. To manually set this up with SQL servers, you can take a look at this guide from MySQL.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>After finishing the setup, the instance will be created and the databases synced. Connect to the read replica and check the status of the replication using the command SHOW SLAVE STATUS and wait until ‘SQL_remaining_delay’ is 0. This means the database has been fully replicated across.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Next, we will set up WordPress to see both databases: to read from the freshly created read replica, and write (and maybe read) from the master (original) database.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Download \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwordpress.org\u002Fplugins\u002Fhyperdb\u002F\">https:\u002F\u002Fwordpress.org\u002Fplugins\u002Fhyperdb\u002F\u003C\u002Fa> (Note this is not installed as a plugin) from the plugin directory and move the file named db.php into your wp-content directory. This file is the brains of HyperDB and allows numerous ways of optimising and configuring your database setup for WordPress, from partitioning to replication and failover.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Here I will just be showing you how to set up the master DB with a read-only replica. Now that HyperDB is ready and waiting for our configuration we tell it what databases to use in the db-config.php file. This is placed in your web root (where your wp-config.php file should be). Tom Blomfield, from the upcoming banking startup \u003C\u002Fspan>\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fgetmondo.co.uk\u002F\">\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mondo\u003C\u002Fspan>\u003C\u002Fa>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was among them. Tom and co at Mondo have always thought that traditional banks were behind the times and not reacting to how people now access the world around them. They had always thought there was a better solution out there, but with restrictions on financial applications and data there was never a reasonable entry point into the market. \u003C\u002Fspan>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the \u003C\u002Fspan>\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.theregister.co.uk\u002F2015\u002F11\u002F17\u002Ffca_paves_the_way_for_cloud_computing_in_uk_financial_services\u002F\">\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FCA releasing a report in late 2015\u003C\u002Fspan>\u003C\u002Fa>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stating that cloud computing was now at a point where it was a secure and viable method for general use, Mondo seized this opportunity to revolutionise the way banks behave and have been flooded with sign ups since they announced themselves. Even after the keynote their area in the ‘Startup Section’ was flooded with people wanting to sign up, but for Android users (like myself) we will have to wait a bit longer for the app even when though we are 40,000 deep in the queue!\u003C\u002Fspan>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mondo was not the only financial business to be featured in the keynote. \u003C\u002Fspan>\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.travelex.co.uk\u002F\">\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Travelex\u003C\u002Fspan>\u003C\u002Fa>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a british founded money exchange company and the first non-bank to be allowed into Heathrow Airport, was also there to bask in the keynote praise. Travelex has had recent success creating its Supercard, an app\u002Fphysical cart hybrid that’s used to cut out bank charges while abroad. One of the issues for Travelex setting up this new card system was that it was actually getting too much interest for its partners or systems to be able to process. So its development team turned to AWS to solve the issue. There was also time to have a play with AWS in the hands on labs, provided by \u003C\u002Fspan>\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fqwiklabs.com\u002F\">\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\">qwiklabs\u003C\u002Fspan>\u003C\u002Fa>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with lots of in-depth training sessions to be done at each person’s own pace with one free lesson per delegate.  The extensive instructions and detailed test AWS environment that was available to play in, manned by seasoned staff who were on hand to talk through anything, provided me with a great learning experience..\u003C\u002Fspan>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also spotted among the partners were many AWS staff, including architects who were on site to provide answers to all the technical questions you could wish to ask (as long as you don’t mind waiting 10-30 minutes). After this were a number of sessions aimed at either fundamentals or in-depth looks at different AWS services. With each of these was another company, there to big up the AWS ecosystem.
